When Pigs Fly Indoor BBQ Bash 2024 | Smokin Brothers Pellet Grills & Cape Girardeau BBQ Event

When Pigs Fly Indoor BBQ Bash: BBQ, Whiskey flavors, and a Whole Lot of Fun in Cape Girardeau, MO

A New Kind of BBQ Bash

When most people think BBQ competition in January in Missouri, they picture pitmasters bundled up outside in the cold, braving wind and weather for the love of smoke. But Smokin Brothers out of Cape Girardeau flipped that idea on its head with the When Pigs Fly Indoor BBQ Bash.

Held inside while the temperatures outside were dipping below freezing, this event brought the best of barbecue together without the frostbite. For fans, families, and foodies, it was a chance to enjoy incredible smoked meats in comfort—and for teams, it was a chance to compete in a totally unique atmosphere.

The Indoor Event – Smoke Meets Comfort

This wasn’t your average backyard throwdown. The Indoor BBQ Bash featured 10 seasoned BBQ teams showing off their skills alongside 5 Hero’s Cup teams, adding a special layer of excitement and heart to the event. Hero’s Cup teams brought passion and purpose, pairing BBQ legends like Health Riles, Myron Mixon, Moe Cason, & Bobby T, Megan Day, & Sunny Lynn with teams of first responders.  With these teams in the middle of the event, the outside was taken over by 10 teams of pros who brought the firepower, creating a mix of competition and camaraderie that you just don’t find every day.

Walking the floor, you could smell the blend of smoke, spice, and wood pellets drifting through the air. The setup gave guests the chance to get up close to the action—chatting with pitmasters, sampling bites, and learning what makes each team’s style stand out. Instead of shivering around a pit outside, people were pulling up chairs, enjoying the warm vibe, and making it an all-day experience.

The best part? It was more than just a cook-off. The event felt like a community gathering where BBQ lovers connected with teams, swapped stories, and cheered each other on. With the mix of competition, food, and fellowship, the Indoor BBQ Bash turned a cold winter weekend into one of the hottest events around.

Smokin Brothers Pellet Grills – The Heart of the Cook

At the center of it all was Smokin Brothers pellet grills, the presenting sponsor and backbone of the bash. Known for being built by a family of BBQ lovers for BBQ lovers, these grills are designed to deliver consistent heat, rich smoke flavor, and rock-solid durability. Whether you’re a weekend warrior in the backyard or a competitor chasing trophies, Smokin Brothers grills have the versatility to handle anything—from pork butts to delicate desserts. Seeing these rigs lined up indoors, putting out championship-level BBQ, just proved how dependable they really are.

Hero’s Cup Winner

Heath Riles came out on top as the Hero’s Cup winner, and it couldn’t have gone to a more deserving pitmaster. Known for his competition dominance and line of award-winning rubs and sauces, Heath brought his A-game to Cape Girardeau and impressed both the judges and the crowd.

The Hero’s Cup has a special energy—it’s about more than just food.  It’s about honoring dedication and spirit—and Heath nailed it on both fronts. His team showed off the kind of skill and creativity that’s made him a household name in the BBQ world, and walking away with the Hero’s Cup title was the perfect cap to an already unforgettable event.

Our Team – Powered by Kurvball BBQ Whiskey

Of course, I’ve got to brag on our team a little. Sponsored by Kurvball BBQ Whiskey, we came to play—and we brought some seriously unique dishes to the table. First up was our pork steak with a crème Brulé style topper. Yep, you read that right. Smoky, savory pork capped with a sweet, caramelized fluff on top—it turned heads and had people talking. That little “sweet meets heat” twist was exactly what we were going for.

We didn’t stop there. Our second dish was a pork tenderloin pig shot, a creative bite that packed bold flavor into a small package. It was rich, smoky, and the kind of appetizer you wish you had a whole tray of. Those two dishes showed off the fun side of competition BBQ—thinking outside the box and giving the crowd something they’ll remember.

Best of all, this wasn’t just a one-man show. We were an all-star lineup of pitmasters:

  • Dave White – Great White Smoke
  • James “Grubbs” Grubs – Grubaque
  • Chef Philip Dell – Asylum BBQ
  • Charles Gordon
  • Mike ‘Rock’ Rauch – Smoked Q

With that much talent under one tent, the cook was just as fun as the food was flavorful. Every dish was a collaboration, and every bite was a reflection of teamwork.

Wrapping It Up – BBQ Indoors, Winter Outside

At the end of the day, the When Pigs Fly Indoor BBQ Bash was one of the most unique competitions I’ve ever been a part of. Where else can you smoke meat indoors while it’s below freezing outside? Between the incredible teams, the Smokin Brothers grills, the energy from Hero’s Cup, and the wild creativity of the dishes, it was an event that reminded everyone why BBQ is more than just food—it’s community, innovation, and fun.

Cape Girardeau proved that great BBQ doesn’t have to be limited by weather. When Pigs Fly is proof that with a little creativity, the smoke can roll year-round. And trust me—if you get a chance to go next year, don’t miss it.
