Gameday Wet Wings: My Go To For Saucy Wings When Watching the Game

If you want to be the MVP of your next watch party, these Gameday Wet Wings are your ticket. Juicy, smoky wings tossed in a sticky, flavor-packed sauce — they’re messy in the best possible way. Whether you’re firing up the grill for football Sunday, hockey playoffs, or just because wings sound good (which is always), this recipe is a winner.

In this recipe, I’ll cover:

  • Why Gameday Wet Wings are a crowd favorite
  • The simple ingredients you’ll need to make them
  • Step-by-step instructions for grilling or smoking
  • Pro tips to take your wing game to the next level

Let’s get started!

Why Make Gameday Wet Wings?

These aren’t your average bar wings. We’re talking tender, smoky meat with crispy skin that gets drenched in a sticky, sweet-and-spicy glaze right before serving. They’re addictive, they’re finger-licking good, and they disappear fast.

  • Perfect for Sharing – A big platter of wings is the ultimate party food.
  • Bold Flavor – Smoky, tangy, sweet, and spicy all in one bite.
  • Customizable Heat – Keep it mild or crank it up depending on your crowd.

Ingredients for Gameday Wet Wings

Meat:

  • 2 lbs chicken wings, separated into flats and drumettes

Rubs & Sauces:

  • 2 tbsp Traeger Whiskey Dust Seasoning
  • 1/2 cup Rock’s Irish Whiskey BBQ sauce (or your favorite)

Three Best Wood Pellets or Chunks for Smoking Wings

If you’re smoking these wings instead of grilling them, here are my top picks:

  1. Signature Series – Sweet, smoky but mild, perfect balance for anything.
  2. Cherry – Slightly fruity with a gorgeous mahogany color.
  3. Hickory – A little bolder for that classic BBQ punch.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prep the Wings – 10 minutes

  • Separate the drum from the flat.
  • Pat wings dry with paper towels (this helps get them crispy).
  • Toss them in Traeger Whiskey Dust Seasoning until evenly coated.

2. Fire Up the Pellet Smoker – 15 minutes

  • Preheat your pellet smoker to 400°F with your chosen wood pellets.

3. Cook the Wings – 45 minutes

  • Grill at 400°F until wings reach 175°F internal temperature, flipping halfway through.

4. Sauce ‘Em Up – 2 minutes

  • Place cooked wings in a large bowl.
  • Pour sauce over the top and toss until every wing is coated.

5. Set the Sauce – 10 minutes

  • Pile onto a platter and serv

6. Serve – Immediately

  • Pile onto a platter and serve hot. Keep napkins handy — these wings live up to their “wet” name.

Key Steps Summary

  • Separate, dry and season wings
  • Preheat pellet smoker
  • Cook until fully done and crispy
  • Toss wings in sauce, set and serve

Pro Tips

  1. Dry Skin = Crispy Skin – Don’t skip patting the wings dry before seasoning.
  2. Sauce at the End – Toss wings in sauce after cooking so they don’t get soggy.
  3. Double the Sauce – If you like extra drippy wings, make a little more sauce for dipping.

Common Questions

Q: Can I bake these in the oven?
A: Yes! Bake at 400°F for 40–45 minutes, flipping halfway. Then toss in sauce.

Q: How spicy are these?
A: That’s up to you. Adjust the hot sauce to your taste, or leave it out for mild wings.

Q: Can I make them ahead of time?
A: You can cook the wings ahead, but sauce them right before serving to keep them from getting soggy.

Q: What sides go with Gameday Wet Wings?
A: Celery sticks, carrot sticks, fries, or even mac & cheese work great.

Final Thoughts

These Gameday Wet Wings are everything you want in a wing — smoky, crispy, saucy, and full of flavor. They’re easy enough for a weeknight and impressive enough for a party spread.

Ready to make them? Fire up your grill or smoker and get ready to watch them disappear before halftime.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 3 whole Chicken Wing Flats
  • 3 whole Chicken Wing Drums
  • 3 tbsp Traeger Whiskey Dust Seasoning Substitute our Honey Chipotle
  • 3 tbsp Rock's Irish Whiskey BBQ Sauce

Instructions

  • To prepare the wings, split them into drums and flats and discard the tips.
  • Once you're done separating the wings, give them a little pat dry using a paper towel. Then, simply pop them onto a cooling rack and let them chill in the fridge for 1-2 hours to get rid of any extra moisture.
  • Crank up your Traeger Timberline XL to 400º. While it heats up, place your wings in a large bowl, add your favorite seasoning and a little cornstarch, then toss to combine and coat the wings. Then place your wings back on the cooling rack and season both sides.
  • Using your cooling rack place your seasoned wings onto the Traeger Timberline XL and grill for about 45 minutes (checking them at about 30 minutes).
  • Once the wings appear crispy, remove them from the grill and transfer them to a large bowl. Add some Irish Whiskey BBQ Sauce and toss to incorporate them well. Put the coated wings back on the grill and cook for an additional 5 minutes to set the sauce.
  • You've done it! Take the wings off the grill and let rest for 2-3 minutes and then savor the flavor of these amazing game day wings.
